How to Differentiate Color
Before going to any color analysis consultation, there is this one thing I want you to know about color: three attributes of color. Without fully understanding this language you might walk out confused after your color analysis session. This is the information that I explain to all my clients during my consultation.
It will give you language and words to your knowledge of color
Three attributes of color: HUE, VALUE, and CHROMA
HUE is the color of the rainbow. Red, orange, yellow.. All the way to indigo and violet. Those are individual hues. So red is one hue, orange another hue, and everything in between is a separate hue.. So you can think of it as: there are billions of different hues in this world but mainly we have the 7 colors on the rainbow.
Hue will determine the temperature of the color–whether the color is WARM or COOL. Yellow is a warm base color, so any color I mix with yellow will turn to a warm color. Blue is a cool base color, so any color I mix blue will turn to a cool color.
Warm colors tend to have tints of oranges or yellow, (sometimes green), and cool colors will have tints of blue or purple.
VALUE is lightness and darkness of the color. Very simple. If I mix white to a color, it will turn lighter, or higher value. And if i mix black to a color, it will turn darker, or lower value.
Light colors are often described with words like, bright, pastels, water color, etc.
Dark colors are often described with words like deep, dark, dull, etc.
CHROMA is the brightness of the color. How bright, loud, obvious, clear the color is or how soft, dull, dusty, grayish the color is. The more I mix gray (every color in between white and black) the softer and lower the chroma will be of that color.

Now you’ll be able to point out where this color sits on that spectrum of warm vs cool, light vs deep, clear vs soft.
In my next blog ill explain how this connects to our 16 type chart and walk you through how a personal color type chart is birthed from these basic three attributes of color!
