How to Find Your Personal Color
In my previous blog, we talked about the three attributes of color.
Today we’ll learn about how this is related to the personal color chart you see everywhere on pinterest, tiktok, and instagram.
this is Goyu’s 16 personal color type chart!
You can use this specific chart, or the 8 type, 12 type, and 22 type chart. But to understand why you belong where, you need to know how these charts work!
I will explain using our 16 type chart!
The motive behind color analysis which we all know and agree is that we want to find colors that best match us.
But it’s not just about what specific colors work, it’s easiest to know where we stand in the spectrum of
hue: warm vs cool
value: light vs deep
chroma: clear vs soft.
In other words we are trying to find which attributes matter most to you. To see what you’re most sensitive to.
Let’s look at our 16 type chart. And walk through one by one.
Hue (True Warm & Cool Types)
True Spring (warm)
True Summer (cool)
True Autumn (warm)
True Winter (cool)
If HUE is most important to you. You are most sensitive to the temperature of the color. You’re most likely a true warm type (True Spring or True Autumn), or a true cool type (True Summer or True Winter).
If you are a true warm type: true spring and true autumn, you will look best in extreme warm colors like orange and fresh green. And a little bit of coolness in a color will completely wash you out.
If you are a true cool type: true summer and true winter, you will look best in extreme cool colors like magenta, hot pink, and royal blue. Little bit of warmness in a color will make you look dull and tired.
What does it mean by this matters the most? They can wear both a somewhat wide range of clear/soft or light/deep colors, as long as the colors are warm (if you are warm tone) or cool (if you are cool tone). When other types can wear neutral cool and warm colors, these types are sensitive to that.
It will make more sense as you see how VALUE and CHROMA works
Value (Light & Deep Types)
Light Spring
Light Summer
Light Autumn
Deep Summer
Deep Autumn
Deep Winter
So if VALUE is most important to you. You are most sensitive to the lightness/deepness of the color. You are most likely going to be a light type (Light Spring, Light Summer, Light Autumn), or a deep type (Deep Summer, Deep Autumn, and Deep Winter).
If you are a light type: light spring, light summer, light autumn, you are going to love whites, pastels, or watery colors. And darker colors will look heavy and overpower your natural attributes.
If you are a deep type: deep summer, deep autumn, deep winter, you are going to love deeper colors like burgundy, navy’s, etc. as your best colors. Deep types tend to look majestic with these colors. With lighter colors, it will wash them away and make them look tired. Lighter colors lack strength (power) that deep types need in the color.
Chroma (Clear & Soft Types)
Soft Spring
Soft Summer
Soft Autumn
Soft Winter
Clear Spring
Clear Winter
Lastly, if CHROMA is most important to you. You are most sensitive to the saturation of the color. You are most likely going to be a clear type (Clear Spring or Clear Winter), or a soft type (Soft Spring, Soft Summer, Soft Autumn, or Soft Winter).
If you are a clear type: clear spring, clear winter, colors that are bright and pure will make you glow. Muted and soft colors will wash you away and create unnecessary shadows on your face.
If you are a soft type: soft spring, soft summer, soft autumn, soft winter, you are going to love soft and muted tones and any bright and saturated colors will create shadow onto your face. It might look like you cropped your face into that frame or your attention will go to the color first, not your face.
Now that you know how to differentiate colors, the next step is to see which color attributes make you look better compared to others.
For example, I look better in warm colors than cool colors. Next, I compared light vs. deep colors, and I found that deep colors completely washed me out.
This helped narrow my range to light warm types, which includes Light Spring and Light Autumn.
Then I compared those two. I realized that Spring colors are brighter and have higher luminance, and those also washed me out.
Because of that, I determined that Light Autumn suits me best.
I hope this helped you discover your personal color with more clarity. Remember, the goal isn’t to box yourself into a fixed season, but to understand how color works in relation to you, so you can choose colors with confidence and intention.
